Pasadena nestles
against the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains (perspective
views). A picturesque community, its broad, tree-lined
streets and craftsman bungalows give it a 1920's flavor.
Pasadena's population of 135,000 includes a number of students
who attend five local colleges, long-time residents, and immigrants
from the many cultures that contribute to the variety and excitement
of the Los Angeles area.
(Topography
of Los Angeles)
The home of the Tournament of Roses since the 1920's, Pasadena
is the focus of national attention every New Year's Day, when
sunlit skies convince television viewers that southern California
is the land of perpetual summer. In addition to the annual Tournament
of Roses and the Rose Bowl Game, Pasadena citizens celebrate
the Doo Dah Parade, a much more informal and humorous event.
The climate in Pasadena is moderate, with an average mean
temperature of 56 F in January and 75 F in July, and is classified
as semiarid to subtropical. Temperature extremes of 100 F do
occur, but usually it is not humid, even during the hottest
days of summer and late fall. Rain falls infrequently during
the late winter when the snow-capped San Gabriel Mountains
and the tops of palm trees form a striking horizon.
