Broadly speaking, materials scientists investigate two types
of phenomena. Both are based on the microstructures of materials:
i. How can the processing of a material be used to arrange
chemical elements into specific microstructures (such as crystalline
or amorphous structures, internal interfaces, or magnetic domains)?
ii. How do these microstructures influence the properties
of the material (such as strength, electrical conductivity,
or high frequency electromagnetic absorption)?
