| The Materials Science and Engineering of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells |
| Nguyen Minh,
Formerly head of Fuel Cell Research at GE Energy Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology has received widening interest
in the past ten years. The attractive feature of this technology is its
clean and efficient generation of electricity from a broad spectrum of
practical fuels ranging from natural gas, biofuels to diesel and coal
gas. Potential applications for the SOFC cover portable, mobile, and
stationary markets. Significant technical progress has been made in SOFC
technology in recent years; however, a number of issues, especially material-related
issues, need to be resolved before the technology becomes practical.
In this respect, research and development in the material science and
engineering of the technology plays a key role. This lecture discusses
the development of materials for the SOFC and focuses on how selected
materials are tailored and engineered to meet requirements for practical
applications. |
